Social Linking
January 9, 2007 by Alun
Social Linking is a feature lacking from WordPress.com at the moment. I’ve had a look at Oddiophile’s Technorati Tags Bookmarklet and I think I can modify it to produce simple Social Bookmarking bookmarklet. This page is part of an experiment to see if it works.
What the thing is, is a link you can drag to your toolbar or your favourites or whatever. When you’ve finished writing a post on WordPress.com you then:
- Type in an entry to the post slug box. This forms part of the final URL. In this case the slug is social.
- Click on the bookmarklet
- Type in the slug at the prompt
- Copy the code it gives you, by pressing CTRL+C
- Paste it into your entry where you want the links to appear
The bookmarklet can connect to these sites.
del.icio.us
Bluedot
Connotea
Digg
Furl
magnolia
Newsvine
Reddit
Spurl
technorati
…and a link to this page explaining what this is.
You can get your bookmarklet by visiting this page. You’ll need to type in your subdomain as my bookmarklet is set for my page.
If anyone can think of any other must have links then a comment would be helpful.
I’ve used it to produce the code below. You’re welcome to click to see if it works, but I’d be grateful if you didn’t actually submit this post to any sites. It’s very boring if you’re not on WordPress.com and it’s still work in progress. If it still works on January 10 then I’ll announce it in the WordPress forums.
Maybe add blue dot?

And then can I steal it for my blog?
Added, along with furl, magnolia and spurl. There’s even a script now to write the bookmarklet for you which allows to to select which links you want. There is a workaround a problem with a lack of leading zeros in Javascript, but it should keep working on Jan 10. Just in case I’ll hold off shouting about it till then, because it’s years since I’ve played with Javascript.
updated: I just realised my computer has a calendar which I can set to Jan 10 without waiting. It works.
Thanks.
[...] my long quest on how to the Social Bookmarking on my post has been ended today because of Social Linking « Archaeoastronomy . This site will teach how to incorporate the Social Bookmarking for your free WordPress.com [...]
The original source of this bookmarklet technique, with a lot of customization tips, is found at A Tagging Bookmarklet for WordPress and wordpress.com Users.
Sorry, the link I gave is for tags not social bookmarks. I jumped.
However, I’ve been playing with using the same technique to create social bookmarks and you beat me to the punch! Well come. I’ll give it a test drive and report back.
Just started using this after finding it from Lorelle. Thanks. Its pretty neat once you get the hang of it.
Would be even better if you could add a Stumble Upon button too.
Cheers!

I don’t have Stumbleupon, but I’ll give it a go. Hopefully an updated version will be ready tomorrow.
I use http://www.onlywire.com. Its free and quick.
Thanks for the post,

Any chance of looking into the technorati bookmark as it tends to search my entire url and not just the topic.
Great resource. As someone else mentioned above, my search for this type of tool is over.

Thank you so much!! I’ve just started using it, and it’s working great!
You should consider adding some PPC ads on your site and start making money for the great resource you’ve provided.
No, I’m very wary of PPC ads. They work in some contexts, but not others.
Thanks for this tool. It’s awesome. I’m just finding it after it’s been here for over a year. I finally figured out how to make a unique set for each blog entry. I just have one quick question. If I want to add these to previous entries should I change the date in the code provided to the date of the entry? Your help is appreciated.
Nevermind, I answered my own question. You can delete that post if wanted.
Pardon the newbie question… I click on the bookmarklet and nothing happens. Suggestions?
Thank you!

It’s a bit of a process but it seems to work. Thanks!
Hey one comment. If you go use this to add social networking to old posts, it puts the date in the URL as today’s date. So none of the links work. Just be sure you hand edit it to the date it was posted & it works fine.
